Opens: November 2017
Is it garments that bestow power and meaning on us? Or is it the other way around?
Shown together for the first time, the fashion pieces of actress and filmmaker Ronit Elkabetz narrate a story about garments' power to create reality, fashion personas and image-worlds that become etched in the cultural consciousness. They tell us of fashion's power to transform and empower, to charge wearers and viewers with magical energy.
Passing the Mantle invites viewers into a lucid dream of Elkabetz's life through an uncanny juxtaposition of cinema, art, social activism and sartorial innovation. An installation will present the ravishing collection she left behind - a collection she saw as an integral part of her artistic work - comprising anything between couture gowns and ensembles she wore to portray movie characters, bridal gowns, alongside video art and sound projections.
In Elkabetz's closet we find everything from history to geography, immigration, gender, non-European identity and feminism: a collection meticulously kept for years and now opened to viewers for the first time, it invites us to reevaluate the role of clothes in our own lives.
