To celebrate the "Black Box" exhibition, Maya Dvash, Chief Curator of Design Museum Holon, held virtual conversations (in English) with international curators about objects, people, and the different attitudes to them from professional, social, and cultural viewpoints.

Conversation Piece #1 - Glenn Adamson

Glenn Adamson is a curator, writer and historian based in New York. He has previously been Director of the Museum of Arts and Design; Head of Research at the V&A; and Curator at the Chipstone Foundation in Milwaukee. Adamson’s publications include Thinking Through Craft (2007); The Craft Reader (2010); Postmodernism: Style and Subversion (2011, co-edited with Jane Pavitt); The Invention of Craft (2013); Art in the Making (2016, co-authored with Julia Bryan-Wilson; and Fewer Better Things: The Hidden Wisdom of Objects (2018). His newest book is Craft: An American History, published by Bloomsbury, and he is co-host of the online interview series Design in Dialogue.


Conversation Piece #2 - Aric Chen

Aric Chen is the incoming General and Artistic Director of Het Nieuwe Instituut, the institute for architecture, design and digital culture in Rotterdam. In 2019-2020, he was Co-Curator, with Maya Dvash, of “State of Extremes” at Design Museum Holon.

Currently, Chen is based in Shanghai, where he is Professor and founding Director of the Curatorial Lab at the College of Design & Innovation at Tongji University. He also currently serves as Curatorial Director for the Design Miami/ fairs in Basel and Miami Beach. From 2012-2018, he was Lead Curator for Design and Architecture at M+, the new museum for visual culture opening later this year in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District.

Abraham Margalith (1916-1980) a man of vision and action

These days we are inaugurating the Margalit Gallery, named after Dr. Abraham Margalith - a man of vision and action who worked to promote technical education and design studies in Israel. He laid the foundations for the curricula for vocational training in high schools and academic institutions, and worked extensively to advance the connection between technological training and industry, and between industry and design.

Form Follows Garbage

An interview with artist Jan Eric Visser who collects garbage and converts it into works of art. He came to his lecture at iMatter, the Materials Library at Design Museum Holon, with bits of local garbage he found in the area, including pieces of a palm tree and a yellow plastic bag of the kind found at any greengrocer's. "I really like the color", he says, "perhaps it will ultimately result in my best work yet".
