Inroduction / Other Stools Stories:

During the last two months, Adi Hamer accompanied Yaakov Kaufman on his selection and cataloging process, towards the exhibition "Stools" that will open in the museum next week. The many hours she spent with the stools made it possible for her to acquaint herself with the stools and witness their every nuance. What at first seemed like a vast millipede horde slowly turned into singular stools, single sons. Within the next few weeks we will showcase a single stool every couple of days. We will focus on each stool and unfold its narrative.  
Yaacov Kaufman - Stools

The encounter with Yaakov Kaufman's 400 and more stools generates the sense that they can teach one an entire course in industrial design. Each stool constitutes an entire universe; each and every one of them has its own particular "twist", or archetype. Every stool encapsulated a narrative, even the ones Kaufman attributes to his "hasty period".

It is nearly impossible to find a "classic", "standard", or a simply "ordinary" stool; if one could even articulate this kind of definition. One stool teaches us about geometric locking, while its neighbor constitutes a lesson in morphological development. The one whose back is turned to it can compose an entire lesson in ergonomics. In the group of stools on the other side of the "access path" to the objects, I found a family that revealed an ungraspable variety of complex techniques in plywood. There they stand in the studio, in an exemplary disorderly order -from the one standing on a single leg, to the ones whose legs completely touch the ground; flooding the room. They pile face-to-face, back-to-back, shoulder-to-shoulder, divided into cross sectional families of theme and period, many of them also share intimate bonds with stools from other families.

This unorthodox exhibition will eventually showcase "only" around 300 stools, which Yaakov Kaufman designed and built in his studio. The stools are divided into six groups, whose purpose is to convey the different fields of research Kaufman dove into, and which eventually influenced the character and morphology of the objects.

Showcasing such a vast quantity of objects with the same definition, made by the same two hands -constitutes a choice: to expose before us, the spectators, the entire design process, and not only the final polished product. Many of the stools are indeed polished, yet this is not the point. The stool as a stool is not what is at stake; according to Kaufman the stools are, as he defines it, "only a research of structures". Different types of structures: technological, morphological, constructive, structures that force us to sit in a certain way, or relate to trends in modern art. As he exposes his rich research, Kaufman allows us the opportunity to stroll through the recesses of the mind and the work of the designer. He unfolds before us the manner in which a designer moves from one object to the next, and from one theme to another, through the same tool. "The stool is convenient for this type of research", he concludes.
