JF: Video is an interesting analogy, and an apt one. At first there is so much "gee whiz" and "because we can" sort of application. It is a second generation of innovators who will be able to move beyond.
14/6/10GD: I would have to hope so. I was watching the MTV Movie Awards and Cristina Aguilera's bejeweled bodysuit had its own finale that was technological fashion gone very wrong.... a heart appeared in lights on her crotch. I guess it is a bit like the early years of video art. It will take time for the best of the cross-section to emerge and for the creative explorations that Chalayan and Ying Gao are developing to reach a more mainstream arena.
7/6/10JF: As the popular press fills with items related the to exhibition, it becomes increasingly clear how timely this topic is. This link to the BBC, sent to me by my daughter, is the latest such example:click here for the article. Maybe in their next iteration the technology will become integral to the actual design of the garment, as in the directions Kelly and Ying, and in a very different way Kobakant have taken the problem.
GD: How interesting! A megawatt smile isn't enough anymore, now you have to have an electric dress to be noticed in Hollywood. Even though she hasn't been on the scene very long, Lady Gaga could have an exhibition of her costumes to date.Yes, I hope to hear from them this week regarding exhibition design. The show will really start to take shape, literally, as we work out those details.
JF: The Ecouterre e-newletter this week has not only Rihanna, Bono and Lady Gaga in LED lit garments, but our own Alyce Santoro's sonic fabric featured! (click here to read the article)Rihanna wearing a LED dress. Picture from here

Shouldn't we be hearing about exhibition design directions this week? All the detailed questions coming from Tomer make me think, and hopeful, that lots of exacting thought is going into this process. Exciting!
